Official statistics highlight that crime and deviance levels argon rapidly increasing in certain areas or in countries as a whole. From universe only a few hundred thousand, to now, more than 6 million in todays modernised world. However, when analysing the usefulness of statistics in the con of crime, one finds that it has created many different arguments for many different sociologists.
Conte and Durkheim are both Positivists who intend that statistics in relation to crime is useful. They turn over this idea because using statistics is the closest sociology can bewitch to being scientific therefore it is the best option; due to the accompaniment that statistics create quantitative data it is able to use and tested with previous results made by others. However, Anti-Positivists believe that statistical data is non reliable they also believe that due to it not establishing a cause and effect nor a reason behind committing crime and deviance it does not highlight the key issue.
