Point of View in Chekhovs and Oatess The Lady with the Pet Dog
Two versions of The Lady with the Pet Dog by Anton Chekhov and Joyce Carol Oates; two the stories have different locations. Chekhovs story is set in Russia piece of music Oates story is set in the United States. twain the versions are about two married people having a secret extra marital affair and facing the complications and challenges that sleep unitedly with it. Chekovs version is from a male perspective while Oatess version is from a female perspective. Chekhovs protagonist, Gurov is a man who is rough, arrogant and manipulative. He refers women as inferior washout (Chekhov 205). He does not have feelings for his wife and describes her as a tall, erect woman with dark eyebrows, stately and dignified and, as she said of herself, intellectual (Chekhov 205). She rather seems indifferent towards Gurov. The reader gets an touch sensation that she is aware of his infidelities and does not seem to care. She does not cut him any and that is evident when she says The part of philanderer does not suit you at all Dimitry (Chekhov 211). Initially Gurov sees Anna as something pathetic (Chekhov 206). She is timid, young and cheerless in her marriage. Gurov and she spend a lot of time together in a vacation setting.
It is only when Gurov goes back to his family he realizes he can think of nothing but Anna. He follows her to her husbands house but is unable to run her. He meets her at the theater appropriately titled The geisha girl. Symbolically the title represents that an unhappy married man last goes to the mistress. The fact that Gurov ultimately falls in true love with Anna is evident when he catches a sight of himself in the mirror (Chekhov 215) and now only when his head was gray he had travel in love, really truly-for the first time in his life history (Chekhov 215).
