The Harlem Renaissance Man

Poet, novelist, playwright, Langston Hughes was the leading voice of the Harlem

Hughes was natural February 1, 1902 in Joplin, Missouri. Hughes lived with his

These feelings of rejection caused him to grow up insecure and fainthearted about himself. When Hughess grandmother died he went to live with his mother in Lincoln, Illinois. He only spent one year in Lincoln before moving to Cleveland, Ohio. This is where his high condition teacher and disciplinemates recognized his writing talents. Hughes went to live with his father, James Hughes, in Mexico for the summer but did not get a dour with his father. This horrifying conflict contributed to Hughess maturity and he began writing poetry of distinction.

Some of Hughess major poetic influences were Walt Whitman, Carl Sandburg, Paul Laurence Dunbar, and Claude McKay. He also recognized W.E.B. Dubois as a master of prose, and the long ignored stories and novels of Charles Chestnut, which have recently gained more critical attending for both their structural complexity and political content. It was the marriage of these widely varying aesthetics, modernism mixed with an almost religious faithfulness to the power of reputation and musicality in the blues, that gave ride to Hughess voice, which sounded like no other voice that came before it.
