sea Without a Shore by Bill genus Viola is an audiovisual installation with sound and visuals. Furthermore it is similarly a triptych of 3 plasma screens, I in front of you and 2 situated on the left and safe side, in a triangular position & a screen at apiece present. In Christianity the triangle was a symbol where apiece point of the ghostly triangle represented thought, heart and soul. The 3 screens could to a fault represent the crucifixion of Christ, which is one of the most common stories utilize in 13-14 century art. This scene depicts 3 sweepes with Jesus nailed to the cross in the middle and 2 thieves crucified with him on the left & right side. The circle of faint light in the middle of each of the screens, also acts as a halo that is present in around the heads of saints in unearthly art.

In 13-14 century religious paintings there was use of a triptych as well, which usually tells the fib of Christ in paintings and visuals. Ocean without a Shore also tells the story in visuals too.

The installation was originally dis vie on 3 church altars. This furthermore projects a religious environment and how religious art was displayed in churches.

The subject matter in Ocean a Without a Shore, contains figures with motion.



These figures are initially displayed, distant, in a grainy black & white viewpoint, walking towards the viewer, and then seem to walk by a water supplyfall.
As they walk through the body of water, audio of gushing water activates hitting the figure, at this point of synchronicity the figure then transitions to appear in colour.
The figures are wet and appearing as if they are looking at at the viewer. The only thing is that their facial expressions are reacting to something.
possibly they are in purgatory and listening to their sins they committed on earth.


The water could represents baptism & the cleansing of sins, which is relevant to religious art.
