Even though Sherlock Holmes is the main character in the series of stories, it is non he who speaks; it is his companion, Dr Watson, who is the narrator. But there is a cheetah and a baboon.” This makes the reader – who may have not known or heard what the animals are – command to unfold on reading so that they could find out more of these animals therefore involving the reader in the story.
Also the fact that the cheetah and a baboon guarding the house would make the reader suspicious, “we reached the lawn. Crossed it, and were able to enter through the window, when out from a clump of medal bushes darted there what seemed to be a hideous and distorted child, who threw itself on the grass with writhing limbs, and then ran swiftly across the lawn into the duskiness… I had forgotten the strange pets which the doctor affected.” It would encourage them to portend that Dr Roylett may have something to hide therefore training the animals to guard.
